Abbey Physic Community Garden
is a Charity which aims to develop a Community based, working environment for the people of Kent to enjoy long-term. The Garden is set in the heart of Faversham and offers a unique opportunity to establish a tranquil, health-giving, environment that enables people from all sectors of society to come together.
Situated in a beautiful, walled, wild-life friendly, Organically- managed Garden we place an emphasis on the therapeutic benefits of horticultural activities. We grow a wide range of spray-free vegetables, fruit, plants and flowers which are for sale to visitors in return for donations. Over the past two years we have won 2 Gold Awards for Gardening for Wild-Life and also Certificates of Excellence from South and South East in Bloom.
The Old Grammar School Charity has kindly leased us the land at a peppercorn rent and are very supportive of this venture. We have a wonderful Committee comprised of local people and we are very hopeful for the Garden’s future. We are now a Limited Company and a Registered Charity and have suitable Insurance. We have received funding from UnLtd, KCC, Amicus Swale Housing, Allen Willett Foundation, Faversham Rotarians, Barclays, Kent Community Foundation, the Bensted Charity and Gardening for the Disabled, plus other donations from a wide range of local people.
We have a paid Manager and the garden is an inclusive project for adults of all ages who experience additional problems such as mental ill-health, bereavement, physical disablements and people who enjoy working alongside vulnerable, socially-isolated adults and aiding these people who want to get into work but are not able to at present from the local area.
Thanks to support from our funders we are able to offer training in various areas, such as NVQs in Horticulture in association with Hadlow College, and other garden-related courses, thus providing skills that can be used in the community at large.
All garden tasks are adapted to suit the individual gardener and we are able to accommodate people with many minor disabilities. The garden and buildings are suitable for wheelchair users and we are constantly looking to improve our facilities for accessibility for all.
We recently added a wheelchair-accessible pavilion style building, a green house, cold frames and raised beds thanks to grant donations. These enable a wider group of people to enjoy the garden as well as providing us with the space to make jams an chutneys from produce grown in the garden. These are available from the garden for a donation.
We are Membership based and currently have approximately 30 member gardeners. We currently have the capacity for up to 50 member gardeners.
Any adult from the age of 18 upwards (there is no upper age limit) is very welcome to come and talk with us if they are interested in joining.
Membership benefits also include seasonal spray-free vegetables, plants and flowers, as well as home made jams and chutneys using produce from the garden at a reduced rate, a warm friendly atmosphere, a beautiful serene environment and a cup of tea or coffee which is always available.
We are open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 9.00 to 1.00 pm
Saturday afternoons from 12.00pm to 4.00pm.
