Oare String Orchestra

Home / Community / Culture and Arts / Oare String Orchestra
The Oare String Orchestra was founded in 1982 and consists of twenty-four dedicated players from across the county of Kent.

The orchestra’s wide repertoire ranges form Bach and Handel to Stravinsky and Schoenberg, and includes many British composers, some of whom have written specially for the orchestra.

Winner of six PRS awards for programming and performance of contemporary music, OSO has earned acclaim for its rich, vibrant playing in Holland, Denmark and France and in many Home Counties venues.

Situated on Oare Creek, overlooking the marshes just outside Faversham, the village of Oare is home to the orchestra’s founder and Life President, Don Goodsell. The inaugural concert took place on 17 October, 1982, at Oare Church, with an orchestra of 17 mainly local players.

Although the orchestra has now moved "home" to the Alexander Centre, Faversham, for most of its concerts, it maintains its links with Oare by rehearsing in the village hall prior to each concert.

Oare String Orchestra promotes three concerts in Faversham each year. Usually these are held at the Alexander Centre. The orchestra occasionally performs at other venues and is always keen to discuss opportunities to take part in festivals and to perform on other, ad hoc, occasions.
