PublicationsThe Faversham Society is a registered charity run by 100% voluntary effort. All profits from sales are ploughed back for its work for the care and conservation of the area and its treasures.

The Society pioneered interest in the history of the UK explosives industry when it saved the Chart Gunpowder Mills, oldest in the world, from the jaws of the bulldozer in 1966 and then restored the surviving mill. PublicationsThere are now working replicas of this in Ballincollig (Co Cork) and Launceston (Tasmania).

The Society was closely associated with the conservation and interpretation of the Oare Gunpowder Works, established just west of Faversham in 1684, closed in 1934, and opened to the public in 2005. Currently it plans to reinstate a second millhouse at Chart Mills.

At the Fleur de Lis Heritage Centre Museum, the Gunpowder Room, features a 15-minute film tracing the history of the local industry.
