Faversham is nationally famed as a brewing town, with
Shepherd Neame producing beers in Court Street opposite the former Whitbread Fremlins brewery, much of which is now a Tesco store. A few hundred yards from those breweries past and present is a plaque recalling a man who helped hop gardens to supply hops for brewers. Thomas Butcher (c1827-1912), originator of the Butcher System for stringing hops, once the most popular, lived at 43 Newton Road, where he is commemorated by a plaque.
