Biography

When I failed my Art O’level , never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would be able to experience the thrill of selling one of my paintings to another individual – knowing someone else appreciates your work is a unique feeling, and one I feel is unsurpassable - I still get an enormous thrill every time I sell one of my paintings.

Born in Kensington, I moved to Faversham in 1984 but only took up Art after the birth of my first son in 1989. I studied at evening classes, learning to use a variety of mediums and owe a lot to my teacher Douglas, who showed such enthusiasm and encouragement for everyone, no matter what their standard.  I soon joined the local Faversham Art Society and sold my first painting called ‘My Holiday’ (a Watercolour and Pastel) at my first Society Exhibition in 1994.

Encouraged by friends and family to continue with my Art I joined a Life Class with tutor Cheryl Fountain, a renowned local artist and in 1995 completed a years Foundation Course during which I was introduced to oils, a medium I now find so exciting and have experimented with for the past 4 years. The technique, which I have developed and use today, gives an extremely subtle effect with an almost photographic feel at times.

I am inspired by two Artists in particular, Oscar Kokoscha and Claude Monet – both of whom painted from within, from the heart, and with much feeling.

I have painted and sold a variety of work including Portraits, Landscapes, Wildlife, Flowers and Abstracts in Pastels, Oils and Watercolours – each one an original, unique and inspired piece of work.

Thank you for your interest, I hope you enjoy your visit to my webpage.

My Inspiration

Lorraines Art Oscar Kokoschka (Austria, 1886-1980, England) 'Painting, you know, isn't based on just three dimensions, but on four. The fourth dimension is a projection of myself' - KOKOSCHKA . I have adopted this philosophy and each piece of work I do is from within, a projection of myself and how I see the different forms I paint or draw.

Lorraines ArtIn his painitng Woman in Blue he applied the paint thickly and broadly, using intense colours and violent contrasts, conveying strong emotions and achieving an effect of great spontaneity. I enjoyed emulating Kokoschka's technique when painting my Woman in Blue in acrylics (pictured left), which now hangs in my dinning room as a constant reminder of this great master. The original Woman in Blue painted in oils by Kokoschka 1919 was from a life-size doll that he had commissioned in Alma's image, his lost love.
