Carnival 2005
Float at Faversham Carnival

The next Faversham Carnival is to be held on Saturday, 16 October, 2010, and organisers are already working to make sure that it matches the success of the 2009 event.

Faversham Carnival is reputed to be the best in Kent, as anyone who has joined in, either as a spectator or a participant, will agree.

The carnival began back in 1890 to try to condense the celebration of Guy Fawkes from several days into one.

Before this time, the remembrance of 5 November was etched in the memories of Faversham folk so vividly that each year they would blacken their faces and march around the town carrying effigies, firing rockets and building fires. They caused such chaos in 1857 that the mayor,  F. F. Giraud, was forced to read the Riot Act.

Well, the celebrations today are not quite that riotous, although great fun is had by all those who attend.

There will be fantastic events in Faversham throughout the day with entertainment for the children and the crowning of the Carnival Queen.

The procession starts from Whitstable Road at 6.30pm. You will be able to buy Carnival Programmes listing the events and the order of the procession on or before the day from the Fleur de Lis Heritage Centre.

Over the years, the Faversham Carnival Club has raised thousands of pounds for local charities and it relies heavily on the generous donations of bystanders.

We very much hope to see you on Saturday, 16 October, when we can promise you a fantastic day and evening.
