A plaque at Jacob Yard, Faversham, records the fact that it is named after Edward Jacob, historian and surgeon, whose nearby home at 76 Preston Street also bears a plaque. He wrote History of Faversham (1774) and Plantae Favershamienses (1777), listing uncommon plants in the area. Jacob, four times Mayor of Faversham, published an edition of Arden of Faversham, in which he raised the question of whether the play was Shakespeare’s, an issue still being debated by academics.
