Primary Schools
We have produced shorter versions, up to one to one-and-a-half miles in length, for each walk; these are for half-day field trips. The majority of walks either use footpaths or quiet country lanes so they are safe to walk with groups of children. We have also suggested picnic spots in case you and your pupils wish to bring packed lunches. Trips for each walk are activity-based and have been created to link into Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum focussing on numeracy, literacy, geography, history, science and art and design. You will find a list of core subjects covered is highlighted in the resource sheet for each field trip. While each resource is designed for a half-day trip, activities outlined can be carried out in the classroom as well as on the walk, so you can continue to refer to the field trip in classroom teaching long after you and your students have enjoyed the walk. Secondary Schools Our eight featured walks vary in length from 5¼ to 11 miles. You can choose to walk a shorter section of each one if you prefer and there are shorter, off-shoot loops on some. The majority of walks follow footpaths or quiet country lanes so are safe for groups. Information about the walks will allow you to bring each one to life with your students through exploration of local food and drink, environment, wildlife and heritage. The walks can be used to supplement teaching across a wide range of subject areas and as part of enrichment activities. You can also use the walks in connection with activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards or with fund raising activities such as sponsored walks.
