Thank you to everyone who came along to the Faversham Magna Carta Weekend!
Faversham shone in medieval glory for the Magna Carta Weekend on the 13-14th June, with over 20,000 residents and visitors estimated to have attended the event. People travelled far and wide to take part in the celebrations of the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta – some as far as from Australia. The Magna Carta Rediscovered Exhibition at the Alexander Centre was flooded with 2,600 visitors over the weekend.
The Magna Carta Weekend put on an incredible display of medieval activities and entertainment including a knight school, birds of prey, archery, medieval camp, re-enactments, period music and the opportunity to take part in many medieval crafts such as spinning, wood turning and stone masonry.
The town’s medieval architecture was the perfect setting for the event. With hundreds of people in period dress and the sounds of the cattle lowing in the medieval market under the Guildhall, Faversham was transported back in time to 800 years ago when the Magna Carta was sealed.
Nuala Brenchley-Sayers is a director of Faversham Business Partnership which coordinated the event. She says: “The wonderful people of Faversham have joined forces to organise yet another fantastic local event. We owe many thanks to the team of volunteers who worked so hard over the last few months making banners, bunting and Medieval clothing. Grahame Kane and his team from Faversham Market also pulled out the stops to ensure the Weekend was a great success. Our thanks also go to The Free Men of the Blean Reenactment Society, Joe’s Bows, Faversham Society and All the World’s a Stage for their support and involvement.”
"The feedback we’ve received from visitors and people taking part has been incredible, with many requests to hold another medieval weekend next year. So watch this space!"
