Kentish Sail Association
The Kentish Sail Association is the only club in Kent that provides a unique link with the traditional vessels of commerce and leisure that have sailed the Thames estuary since the mid-eighteenth century. Traditional boats, including Thames barges, Dutch barges, smacks, bawleys, gaffers, classic Bermudans and traditional powered vessels can been seen alongside the Iron Wharf in Faversham and along Oare Creek to Hollowshore.
Established 1972 and affiliated to the Royal Yachting Association, the Kentish Sail Association organises the annual Swale Smack and Sailing Barge race in the River Swale and also strives to promote public interest in traditional craft. Each race draws together perhaps the biggest fleet of historic vessels that can be seen at any one time anywhere in the country. Soon a new generation of sailors will be needed to take on these vessels, to sail and preserve them. Today, the Kentish Sail Association is dedicated to helping young people experience days out on the sea in historic craft. It also supports local organisations that are involved in training youngsters on the water.
