Abbey Outer Gateway

A plaque on Arden's House, Abbey Street, Faversham, marks the site of the outer gateway of the former Faversham Abbey (founded 1147). The eastern portion of the gatehouse (c1250) forms part of Arden's House. It was in this house in 1551 that Thomas Arden, a former Mayor of Faversham, was murdered by his wife, Alice, and her lover, a crime immortalised in the play Arden of Faversham, the first English domestic drama and attributed by some scholars to Shakespeare.
